Located on a scenic peninsula overlooking the Bay of Fundy, Swallowtail Lighthouse is one of Grand Manan Island’s most recognizable landmarks. Owned by the Village of Grand Manan and managed by the Swallowtail Keepers Society, the lighthouse remains an active aid to navigation while serving as a cherished heritage destination for both residents and visitors.
For many travelers, Swallowtail Lighthouse is the first glimpse of Grand Manan Island. Beyond its iconic red-and-white tower, the site offers breathtaking coastal views, opportunities for photography and sightseeing, and a chance to explore the island’s rich maritime history.
Visitors can climb the lighthouse’s 54 steps to the lantern room and enjoy panoramic views of the surrounding coastline and the Bay of Fundy. Along the way, three floors of museum exhibits tell the stories of the lighthouse, its keepers, and the island’s seafaring heritage.
Getting There
Your journey begins with a scenic 90-minute ferry ride from Blacks Harbour, New Brunswick, to Grand Manan Island. During the summer season, ferries typically depart every two hours, while service is generally reduced to every four hours during the off-season.
Upon arriving at the ferry terminal, turn right onto Pettes Cove Road, left onto Old Airport Road, and then right onto Lighthouse Road. Swallowtail Lighthouse is approximately a 3-minute drive or a 13-minute walk from the ferry terminal.
