The Winnipeg Women’s Building at 730 Alexander Avenue was constructed in 1921 as the Maclean Mission, serving as a neighborhood chapel for decades. In 1978, the United Church sold the property to the Winnipeg Women’s Cultural and Educational Centre, which officially opened the space in February 1979. Over the next four years, the building served as a vital, grassroots hub for feminism, low-income advocacy, and queer liberation, providing safe meeting spaces for marginalized groups like the Committee Against Violence Towards Women and the Lesbian Phone Lines. Due to mounting financial pressures, the center was forced to close in 1983, but the site remains a historic symbol of community organizing and social activism in Winnipeg.
