A Picnic Tour Through the National Capital Region

Just around the corner from Parliament Hill, follow the steps down to this gorgeous spot in the heart of the city. This green space is bounded by mature trees, the famous Rideau Canal locks and the Ottawa River. Perfect for sitting by the water and watching the boats go by! After lunch, you can learn more about how the city of Ottawa came to be, a rich history dating back to the early 1800s.

On the shores of Dow’s Lake, say hello to this friendly fellow, a gift from the Netherlands. Commissioners Park has excellent picnic options, whether you prefer to sit at a picnic table, spread out on a blanket under mature oaks, or soak up some sun on the new floating dock. Make sure to visit in May to see the whole place decked out in tulips!

Across the lake you’ll find the expansive grounds of Ottawa’s Experimental Farm. The arboretum is so green and peaceful, you’ll forget you’re still in the middle of the city. We certainly did when we spent a fun afternoon out of the office, eating snacks and playing frisbee!

Rideau Hall is a peaceful stop with plenty of space to settle in for a picnic. The grounds are full of gardens, trees, and shaded areas, and the Rockcliffe neighbourhood around it makes the whole visit feel quiet and tucked away, even though you’re still close to the city.

Across the Ottawa River, Symmes Inn Museum has that charming Old Aylmer feel and lots to do nearby. Aylmer Beach and Parc des Cèdres are close, so you can make an afternoon of it with green space, waterfront paths, and a relaxed summer atmosphere. In the warmer months, the area often has outdoor events, music, and concerts in the park.

If you’d prefer to picnic somewhere a little farther off the beaten path, take a drive out to Dunrobin. Explore the grounds of this historic manor and enjoy breathtaking views of the Ottawa River.

As the last stop on your picnic tour, the Renfrew Swinging Bridge is a fun little surprise, almost like a mini Capilano Bridge closer to home. Set over the Bonnechere River, it’s simple, scenic, and a bit unexpected. It may be a little out of the way, but it’s still within the National Capital Region, making it a nice place to slow down and end the day with something different.
