Where Art and Historic Places Meet #CanadianVisitList

I’ve always loved visual art. It inspires me, soothes me, and sparks joy—all at once. Fortunately, many historic places feature art galleries or spaces where people can share their creativity with the community. I even used to work at an art gallery located in a historic home, so that combination holds a special place in my heart.

As you can see in the image above, I took a virtual selfie at Emily Carr’s childhood home. If only I could have met her in person! Still, I’m grateful I can continue to appreciate her art and find meaningful ways to connect with her through the place where she grew up.

This summer, I’m hoping to travel more within Canada. After this past political season in the US, I find myself appreciating Canada more deeply than ever—its values, its people, and the strength we have together.

Emily Carr House

Victoria, British Columbia

Emily Carr is really one of my favourite artists. The many ways she has painted the forest has inspired me for years. I’m not sure we would have gotten along as kids but it sure would have been interesting to know her.

I have been here several times as a child, but I never paid attention to the story of the building or the land. I can’t wait to visit again, and let that aspect of the story sink in.

Rosamond Woolen Co./ Mississippi Valley Textile Museum

I have had the pleasure of having a tour at the Mississippi Valley Textile Museum. There’s always a reason to go back, especially since they have a rotating art gallery on the main floor.
